Tylenol Case Evaluation

For a long time, women have been told that pain relievers like Tylenol® containing acetaminophen are safe to use during pregnancy. But recent studies suggest that using this medicine too often while pregnant might increase the risk of autism or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in the baby.

In 2018, researchers looked at seven studies involving 132,738 pairs of moms and kids. They found that children who were exposed to acetaminophen for a long time in the womb had a 20% higher chance of having autism. In 2019, another study from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health discovered something interesting. They found that children whose blood samples taken from their umbilical cords had high levels of acetaminophen (the main ingredient in Tylenol) were about three times more likely to be diagnosed with autism later on in childhood compared to kids with lower levels of acetaminophen in their cord blood.
